Promoting responsible
dog ownership

What your breeder will provide

When purchasing a puppy from a Dogs West registered breeder, you can expect responsible breeding practices and ethical standards to be upheld.

Bringing a new puppy or dog into your home is an exciting journey!

Below is an outline of what you should receive and expect when acquiring a puppy from a Dogs West member:

1. Healthy Puppies

Dogs West breeders must ensure that all puppies are in the best possible state of health at the time of sale. If a puppy has a known health issue or disability, the breeder is required to obtain written acknowledgment from the buyer detailing the condition of the dog.

2. Comprehensive DocumentationShiba puppies

Every puppy purchased from a Dogs West member will come with the following essential documentation:

  • Breed Characteristics: Written details explaining the characteristics of the breed.
  • Vaccination Certificate: A veterinary-signed certificate confirming the puppy has been vaccinated against Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, and Parvovirus.
  • Microchip Information: Verification of the puppy’s microchip number, with the transfer of microchip details to the new owner being the breeder's responsibility.
  • Responsible Dog Ownership Information: Guidance on proper care and ownership responsibilities.

Official Documentation

A written receipt stating whether the puppy will be transferred into the new owner’s name or retained under a Non-Transfer Agreement.
Any other conditions of sale or agreements.

3. Pedigree Registration

All puppies bred by a Dogs West member must be registered with the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) on either the Main Register or Limited Register.

  • Upon registration, the new owner will receive a Certificate of Registration, which serves as proof of the puppy’s pedigree and registration status.

4. Transfer of Ownership

The breeder is responsible for transferring the ownership of the puppy to the buyer. This must be done by submitting the appropriate Dogs West transfer form within 90 days of the change of ownership.

  • If both parties agree that the breeder will retain ownership, a Non-Transfer Agreement must be completed and submitted within the same timeframe.

5. Microchipping

By Law all puppies must be microchipped before they can be registered with the ANKC. The breeder is responsible for ensuring:

  • The microchip details are recorded on a recognised National Registry within Australia.

  • The microchip details are transferred to the new owner in compliance with The Dog Act.

By purchasing a puppy from a Dogs West member, you can have confidence in receiving a healthy, well-documented, and ethically bred companion. Always ensure you receive all required documentation and understand your responsibilities as a new puppy owner.
